The Philippine National Police (PNP) launched its "Bisikleta Iglesia" campaign in order to ensure the safety of the Catholic faithful who would be visiting churches this Holy Week.
The activity was headed by PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Rhodel Sermonia, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, and volunteer bicycle enthusiasts in places of worship and convergence within the region, including areas such as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo, the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros, Malate Church, and the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Baclaran.
Patterned after the "Visita Iglesia", the "Bisikleta Iglesia" allows cops to conduct focused patrolling and reach areas where it is difficult to use patrol cars, securing a swift response compared to patrolling on foot.
Moreover, the said activity is a strategic anti-crime program of the PNP to keep the public safe.
Okubo assured the people that the police officers will be visible and felt within Metro Manila streets during the entire Holy Week.
Furthermore, there will be PNP personnel looking out for the Police Assistance Desk in some conspicuous places, ready to assist the community and respond to any possible incidents that may arise.
Aside from strengthening the police presence, the "Bisikleta Iglesia" campaign also promotes physical fitness and environmental awareness through riding bicycles as an alternative way of transportation.
